Biography
Casper Braat, Amsterdam (1991)
In 2015 Casper Braat graduated from the designLAB department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (BA), with the ‘McJezus’’ installation. In 2019 he attended the Sandberg Institute Dirty Art Department (MA).
Since 2018, Casper has been represented by Torch Gallery. His first solo show, ‘Forever’, opened in September 2020. ‘Forever’ (2020-current) consists of everyday home appliances that have been made into timeless marble sculptures. Later, sculptures in this series were presented during Design Week Eindhoven in 2022 and 2024.
In 2023, the ‘Departures’ project was presented for the first time. This installation contains a series of airport sculptures in a passenger terminal, along with an automated vending machine for marble sculptures and the 12-hour film ‘Waiting in Limbo’.
In 2024, during his residency at the Chinese European Art Centre Xiamen (CN), Casper Braat made the film ‘Work in Process’ in which he carves a cubic meter of marble into a cubic centimeter over a 20-day period. This film marks the beginning of his ‘Work in Progress’ installation, a replication of Casper Braat’s marble carving atelier.
His latest project ‘Work in Progress’ is based around a fictive carving studio. The sculpture series was first previewed during a solo presentation at Enter Art Fair (Copenhagen, DK) and is exhibited fully in a solo show at TORCH Gallery (Amsterdam, NL) in 2025 and at Art Rotterdam 2025 (NL).
Since 2023, all Casper Braat’s commissioned films are represented by 100% Film Amsterdam, where Casper Braat and Lernert Engelberts collectively work under the name: Another Duo. www.another-duo.com Together, they create impactful work of enduring value that blur traditional commercial and fine art boundaries, which has earned them industry accolades and awards.
