Vending Machine (2023)

VendingMachine is a fast-art installation that grants a viewer the possibility to purchase an artwork with a simple press of a button. All of the sculptures inside are immediately available with the presentation of a pin card or cellphone payment. The robotic conveyor belt delivers each artwork to the exit port, keeping the objects upright and preventing them from falling over.

Choose from a large variety of conveniences, like an Oreo, a Toblerone, or a Coca Cola, among many others. All the artworks in VendingMachine are made from marble and are presented on a nutwood pedestal with acrylic cap. All works come in a small edition of three, plus one artist proof.

VendingMachine is both a moving gallery installation and a self-standing sculpture. This sculpture functions to make artworks readily available for acquisition outside of a conventional gallery setting. On the one hand, this arrangement provides convenience and artworks can be purchased without the need for face-to-face contact with a gallerist or the artist, and is art-on-the-go. While on the other hand art works are decontextualized, stripped of meaning, and presented as consumable products. This arrangement places art in another white cube, and questions the function of that traditional setting for the placement and sale of art.

VendingMachine was first shown in Casper Braat’s Departures solo exhibition at Torch Gallery in January 2023 and at Art Rotterdam 2023.
