1000 Mugs (2018)
Printed and Signed Mugs
25 x 40 Cups placed in grid
This installation was originally exhibited in Sint-Bavokerk in Watou, Belgium. Viewers were asked to bring personal coffee cups in exchange for a numbered mass-produced Casper Braat mug. By the exhibition’s end, 1000 unique mugs, teacups, and glasses replaced the originals. In Dutch, a synonym for coffee is ‘bakkie troost’ which literally translated means ‘cup of comfort’. Churches function as comforting spaces for the faithful. These meanings collide in this installation.
Special thanks to Art and Poetry Festival Watou, Belgium and everyone that contributed to this work.
